Biography
Fronted by vocal powerhouse Malorie Jo Blake, Propter Hawk is a five-piece Toronto rock group whose cinematic, road-worn music is as fitting for packed dance floors as it is for the closing moments of a long night.
Beginning as a conduit for drunken protest songs, Propter Hawk has quickly evolved into something far more ambitious: a means to drag rock and roll into the modern age. The band is built from a formidable lineup of veteran musicians drawn from northern mining towns and big city boroughs, grounding their sound in life experience, grit and groove.
Their 2023 self-titled LP introduced fans to a refined analog sound, using vintage gear and a live horn section to deliver an authenticity that has been long forgotten. The record received national recognition in media such as Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada and The Toronto Star’s “What to Listen to This Weekend”, alongside Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, while international radio play and a provincial tour helped establish the band as one of Toronto’s most compelling live acts. Propter Hawk continued their exploration of the neo-nostalgia world with the release of their EP “Sorry!”, further cementing their place as one of the region’s must-see bands.
Now back in their rehearsal studio—known affectionately as the “Loveshack”—Propter Hawk are heading into their next chapter. With new material on the horizon and a growing reputation, the band stands poised for a future that honours rock and roll’s past while pushing it boldly forward.

Testimonials
Gilles Leblanc - Music Critic (Toronto Star/ROCKthusiast)
"Propter Hawk is Toronto indie meets classic Southern rock - Singer Malorie Blake's voice gives off serious Janis Joplin vibes and there are even HORNS. Cannot ROCKmend enough!"
Carlin Nicholson - Recording/Mixing Engineer (Pineship Sound), Professional Musician (Zeus)
"In my time recording, producing and mixing bands in Toronto and from all over the world – seldom do I come across a group that is as focused and with a sound as realized this early in their careers. Malorie (vocals) is an unprecedented raw talent that will stand shoulder to shoulder with any Canadian alumni of this genre."
